JAZZ "Ready for the 90s'' - Krystall Klear and the Buells (K2B2 2069) |
| Devotees of Ornette Coleman's old music-now looking to the band, Old and New Dreams, for sustenance-would be well advised to seek out this difficult-to find recording and look past the rather obscure name of the Los Angeles quartet responsible for it. This is not specifically Coleman's music, in fact or by intention, but shares the same free spirit and soaring invention-as much or more than Old and New Dreams.
The band is led by tenorman Marty Krystall and bassist Buell Neidlinger, who was a member of pianist Cecll Taylor's bands circa 1960 before heading into symphony orchestras and studios; Krystall may be lesser known, but he's a terrific player in a fashionless style that nevertheless fits the contemporary context. A good San Francisco trumpeter, Warren Gale, and onetime Coleman drummer Billy Higgins completes the quartet. As a bonus, Neldlinger has retrieved and included a 1961 recording with Cecil Taylor and drummer Dennis Charles. The piece, titled P.O., is a 12-bar blues (given fascinating rumination by the pianist) that brings Ready for the 90's up to an acceptable length, thus avoiding what would have been the only conceivable complaint about the record.
