CD Title: Plus One (60 minute VHS Stereo Video) Year: 2002 Record Label: K2B2 Records Style: Contemporary Jazz Musicians: Marty Krystall, saxophone, leader. Hugh Schick, piano. Jack Bone, bass. Barry Saperstein, drums. Special guest: Brenton Banks, violin & piano. Review: It is always an enjoyment to hear a good quartet on CD and on video. I watched and listened to the Marty Krystall Quartet on the video release and it was 60 minutes of nice & easy contemporary jazz at its finest. This video allows the audience to participate openly with the sounds and movements of the musicians, and it is entertaining to watch them perform! The quartet plays the music of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols, and gives an memorable jazz interpretation of Georges Bizet's Prelude and Aragonaise from the Bizet opera, "Carmen." Marty Krystall has worked in over 300 films. He has recorded and/or performed with Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Zappa, Buell Neidlinger, Aretha Franklin, among others. A gifted performer, Marty Krystall shines on this well-made video, and the Marty Krystall Quartet is a topnotch act. PLUS ONE is a winner, and so is the Marty Krystall Quartet. Special note of appreciation to the piano musings of Hugh Schick who knows his piano and how to make it sing! Record Label Website: http://www.k2b2.com Reviewed by: Lee Prosser |
